From pool parties to cookouts, to family reunions hospitality abounds on this 4th of July weekend.
Christian hospitality is one of the most misunderstood concepts in the church today. Christian hospitality is not entertainment simply put Christian hospitality is meeting a stranger and embracing them as a neighbor.
As Jesus and the disciples were traveling to Jerusalem, they came to a certain village where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. Martha as described in Luke 10:38-42 was known for her hospitality. A gracious hostess, a fabulous homemaker and a wonderful cook, Martha worked hard to fix a tasty meal for Jesus.
Legendary Christian hospitality requires legendary preparation. Martha’s preparation was spoiled because her sister Mary was not helping but instead was at the feet of Jesus, taking in every word he said.
An upset Martha came to Jesus saying “Lord, doesn’t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me.”
Jesus said to her, “My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.”
The question is what is the one thing worth being concerned about? The answer is it’s the word of God. Hebrews 4:12 tells us that the word of God is living and active, it is sharper than any two-edged sword and can pierce and discern the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
The next question is have found the one thing worth being concerned about? Or are you still searching too distracted by the preparation, to find it? Hebrews 13:16 tells us to not neglect to do good sharing with you have for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.
Mary discovered the one thing worth being concerned about because of Martha’s Christian hospitality. Enjoy the hospitality of this 4th of July weekend.
