Saul and the people of Israel faced a dilemma that dismayed and made them greatly afraid. Goliath the Philistine champion had challenged them to a fight. He wanted Saul and Israel to pick one person to fight against him. If the Israelite fighter defeated him then the Philistine people would become their slaves but if Goliath prevailed enslavement would be Israel’s lot.

The stakes were high, and the odds were long. Goliath was not only an excellent fighter, but he was also a giant. He was nearly ten feet tall, he wore a helmet and armor on his chest, and legs made of heavy bronze. Weighing 15 pounds his heavy and thick spear was tipped with iron. Goliath was formidable in every way even his armor-bearer induced fear as he walked ahead of the giant carrying a shield.

The dilemma of Saul and the Israelites was simple. Was there someone with the courage, confidence, and competency to face the giant? For they had no choice Goliath must fall.
