The term having skin in the game means being committed to the point that you are willing to place significant personal items on the line. Blood, sweat, and tears are skin in the game elements in athletics, in other ventures time, effort, and money are skin in the game measures.
The disciples as described in John 20:19-31 are in a skin in the game moment. Jesus has died on the cross, and because of their skin in the game with him, the disciples locked themselves in a room fearful that a cross awaited them if they ventured out.
In these tense moments, Jesus appeared saying “Peace Be With You”. The frightened disciples did not recognize Jesus until he showed them his skin in the game. The scars on his hand from being nailed to the cross, the hole in his side made by the tip of a spear, after seeing this the disciples rejoiced.
The disciple Thomas was not there when Jesus appeared. He was skeptical saying that he had to place put his hands in the wounds before he would believe. Jesus appeared again in the locked room saying again, “Peace Be With You” Thomas only had to look at Jesus seeing the skin in the game from the cross to believe.
Again and again, Jesus is showing his skin in the game for us. His wiliness to extend his greetings at our lowest point, his stand for us especially when we fail to stand for ourselves, and his forgiveness of us when we do what we think is unforgivable.
