For me, the television special, “A Charlie Brown Christmas” remains a highlight of the Advent season.

Produced over a half-century ago in 1965, the show features the cast of Peanuts, a newspaper cartoon strip illustrated and written and by Charles Schultz.

Schultz’s singular goal was for the special to focus on the true meaning of Christmas. According to Wikipedia, Schultz was adamant that a reading of Luke 2:8-20 be included. For in his estimation those verses told the true meaning of Christmas.

However, the producers of the show were skeptical they were concerned that religion in the supercharged mid-1960s was too controversial of a topic, especially for a family-oriented television show.

Schultz stood his ground telling his producers "If we don't do it, who will?". And not many people were willing to “do it” as research showed less than nine percent of 1960’s television Christmas episodes contained a substantive reference to religion.

Undaunted, Schultz made Linus’s reciting of the verses from Luke the climax of the special. Incorporating it in such a way that it was impossible for those who may think the message of the true meaning of Christmas was too controversial to edit out.

As Christmas nears Charles Schultz’s question of “If we don't do it, who will?", remains.  Although we may not have a television special or a newspaper cartoon strip, we can still spread the gospel.  We can spread the gospel not only by how we live, how we give, and how we worship but more importantly by simply telling people about Jesus.

So, this Christmas amid the gifts, the parties, and the food that dominates the season let’s tell people about Jesus. Because if we don’t do it who will.
