July 4th, 2022, a celebration of American liberty.  After 2 years of COVID constraints, the celebration of American liberty was on full display.  Families gathering for cookouts, baseball being played in packed stadiums, fireworks, and parades.

It was at a parade in the Chicago suburb of Highland Park, Ill that a gunman shooting from a rooftop killed six people and wounded dozens more.  Parades and celebrations were canceled throughout the Chicagoland area as residents feared copycat shoots might take place.

Jesus speaking to frighten people in his hometown of Nazareth said, “The Spirit of the Lord is on Me.

He has put His hand on Me to preach the Good News to poor people. He has sent Me to heal those with a sad heart. He has sent Me to tell those who are being held that they can go free. He has sent Me to make the blind to see and to free those who are held because of trouble. (Luke 4:18)

Jesus wants us to have freedom, Jesus wants us to have liberty.  So, for me the question is this is the American liberty that we so cherish being heled captive at gunpoint?   And is that gun being held by a Second Amendment to the Constitution whose interpretation, meaning and effect does not meet the times that we are in.

Perhaps it is time to give serious consideration to drafting of a new constitutional amendment providing and protecting the right to bear arms, while ensuring that common sense safeguards can be put in place.

It was the will of the framers of the constitution and more importantly it is the will of God, that we live a life of liberty.

If our liberty on the birthday of our nation is being held at gunpoint it is our God given right to “form a more perfect union” by “altering or abolishing” the thing that is holding us hostage.   It is time to amend the 2nd Amendment.
