A novella, is a short well-structured narrative, designed to bring home a point without the length of a full-fledged novel.  The novella which is the Biblical story of Joseph detailed in Genesis 37-52 brings home the point of God’s preservation of Israel.

The novella details how Israel and its people survive despite their own foolishness and wickedness, indeed, ironically, in part because of them.  Joseph himself acknowledges this saying in Genesis 50:20 that what was meant for evil against him depicted time and again in the novella, God has turned it into good.

Joseph’s novella parallels the novella of our own lives as God preserves us turning what seems like evil into good for the greatness of the Lord.   During the novella of our lives questions that are fundamental to our faith emerge.

Who Is God?  What does it mean to live a meaningful life? How do we build the beloved community? Why do bad things happen? Is there an afterlife? Who am I?

These six questions must have been on Joseph’s mind during the twists and turns of his novella.   They are clearly on our minds during the turbulent times of the novella our lives.

On Sunday, August 6th we will start answering these six questions in series of teachings.  However, on this Sunday we will set up our discussion by examining how Joseph address these six fundamental questions of faith.
