Up to 75% of people worldwide suffer from Glossophobia, the fear of public speaking.

Many famous people have suffered from glossophobia, including actors, politicians and even presidents.

Renée Zellweger, Nicole Kidman, Abraham Lincoln, Gandhi, Sigmund Freud and Thomas Jefferson. All at some point, they mention actually going out of their way to avoid speaking in public.  However, because of their openness to transformation they gained the ability to be effective public speakers.

While there is no evidence that Peter suffered from glossophobia Biblical scholars reported that the disciple of Jesus was a fleshly Christian who was full of himself and his own ideas. Even though he had already received important revelations about Jesus as the Saviour and Messiah.

Peter’s carnality still ruled, and he lived a life characterised by failure, defeat, and spiritual deception.

When Jesus ascended to heaven, he told his disciples to wait in Jerusalem for the “promise of the Father” (Acts 1:4) as they would be baptized with the Holy Spirit.

On the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit came “like the rush of a violent wind” (Acts 2:2) Peter and the other disciples were transformed.

No longer full of himself but full of the Holy Spirit, Peter addressed the multitudes with elegance, grace, and power he declared: “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Acts 2:21)   The people responded and on that day three thousand persons were baptized. (Acts 2:41)

Regardless of the situation glossophobia, sickness or like Peter who lived a life of failure, defeat, and spiritual deception God has given us the Holy Spirit so that it’s transformative power may change our lives.

However, despite the power of the Holy Spirit it only transforms those who are open and ready for the transformation.  After all multitudes listened to a transformed Peter but only three thousand called on the name of the Lord.  So, the question for us today is will you be transformed?  Are you open to call on the name of the Lord?  It’s not a matter of being ready it’s a matter of being open.   Today I pray for your openness.   Your openness to receive the Holy Spirit.
