Grief the deep sorrow caused by the loss of an opportunity, the end of a relationship or the death of a loved one will come to us all.

On June 11th, 1983, the theologian Nicholas Wolterstorff got the call that is every parent’s nightmare, Eric his 25-year-old son had been killed in a mountain climbing accident.

Writing about his grief in the landmark book Lament For A Son, Wolterstorff said “If he was worth loving, he is worth grieving over. Grief is existential testimony to the worth of the one loved. That worth abides.”

We serve a God that knows the worthiness of grief.   Not only did Jesus experience griefs of his own, but as Isaiah 53:3-5 reminds us Jesus bore our grief and carried our sorrows.

Jesus knows the worthiness of our griefs; so, when we take our sorrows to him, he knows what we’re going through.

God knows that death is the leading cause of grief in our lives. In 1st Thessalonians 4:13 God honors the worthiness of our grief.  Telling us that as Christians we should not ‘grieve like the rest of humanity, who have no hope.”

Thanks to Jesus death has lost its sting, and while our grief may last a season or a lifetime, it is not without hope.  For the worthiness of our grief has been validated by Jesus’s death and resurrection.

Because of Jesus our grief is worthy.
