Ready, Set, Lent
So, it’s Fat Tuesday, the eve of Ash Wednesday, the start of Lent.
Lent begins 40 days prior to Easter, where many Christians prepare for the resurrection of Jesus by observing a period of fasting, repentance, moderation, and spiritual self-discipline.
The significance of the 40-day period of Lent is based on two episodes of spiritual testing in the Bible: the 40 years of wilderness wandering by the Israelites, and the Temptation of Jesus after he spent 40 days fasting in the wilderness.
Based on those episodes there are two ways to approach the 40 days of Lent. We can do as the
Israelites simply wondering around, forgetting about God, disobeying God, forsaking God’s goodness, grace, and love. Or we do as Jesus, using these 40 days to do more that pray, and fast but to get closer to God by doing things. Things like giving more of time, talents and treasure to the causes that make a difference. Things like being committed to performing random acts kindness and things like forgiving others and most importantly forgiving ourselves.
So, enjoy Fat Tuesday, but tomorrow let us be ready, set, Lent for it is going to be a glorious time with the Lord.
Remember Ready, Set, Lent!
