Recently 60 Minutes aired an intriguing story about breakthroughs in artificial intelligence. Computers that can teach themselves superhuman skills including the ability to speak to humans like a human. These computers are capable of having chats complete with as 60 Minutes described the human traits of “creativity, truth, error and lies.”
On the day of his resurrection Jesus encounter two of his disciples, they did not recognize him. Nevertheless, Jesus engaged with them in a chat.
As the three waked to Emmaus, a village about seven miles from Jerusalem. Jesus interpreted the scripters for the disciples giving new meaning to God’s plan.
Nearly to Emmaus, Jesus walked ahead as if he was going on however, the disciples begged him to stay and spend the evening with them. At dinner Jesus took bread, blessed it, and broke it. When Jesus gave the bread the disciples eyes were open, as they recognized the risen Savior and at that moment he vanished. The disciples said to each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he was talking to us on the road, while he was opening the scriptures to us?”
Artificial intelligence will do many wonderful things including great things for the kingdom of God. And yes if we are not careful Artificial intelligence will also do some bad things.
However, for all its brilliance to speak to humans like a human artificial intelligence cannot talk to us like Jesus. Artificial intelligence cannot open the scriptures like Jesus, and artificial intelligence cannot burn our hearts like Jesus.
So, take a walk and have a chat with Jesus.
