This week in many places of worship the ascension of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ will be celebrated. The Ascension of the Lord commemorates the fortieth day after the Resurrection when Jesus ascended into Heaven and took His seat at the right hand of His Father.
Also, this week in many houses of worship Mothers will be celebrated. Mother's Day honors motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society.
The account of the ascension of Jesus in Luke 24:52-53 tells us as Jesus was blessings his disciples in a field near Bethany he was carried up to heaven. The disciples worshiped him returning to Jerusalem with great joy.
This great joy must have been bittersweet, for the disciples had to be sad because of the loss of daily physical contact with Jesus. However, it must have been paired with the excitement of Jesus’ return to His Father. Along with the knowledge that they will be reunited with Jesus again in Heaven.
For those of us who have lost a Mother in death, it is my prayer that you will take the great joy of the disciples into this Mother’s Day. Like the disciples take great joy in the memories of our Mothers and what they stood for and taught you. Like the disciples take great joy in the godly Mother that the Lord gave you. And like the disciples take great joy in the knowledge that because of the faith of your Mother and your faith in Jesus Christ that the mother and child reunion will take place in Heaven.
