By now I am certain you have seen it, the brawl in Montgomery. You know the virial video showing a group of white boaters attacking a black co-captain. It sparked a massive fight resulting is assault changes with the city’s mayor calling for justice to be served to the boaters “for attacking a man who was simply doing his job.” It was a heartbreaking example of brothers and sisters living in disunity.
Paul’s letter to the church in Rome is in response to brothers and sisters living in disunity. He ask, “why do you judge and despise your brother?” Paul’s answers this question saying that we will all stand before the judgment seat of Christ for each of us shall give an account of ourselves to God.
So, what account can we give to the Lord? Shure we can all say that we are not brawling with our brothers and sisters but are we truly living and loving with people different from us in religion, race, sexual orientation, and political views?
Are we judging our brother because he voted for Donald Trump? Are we distraught when we see the woman worshiping a God that is not our own? Are we despised because our sister is married to another sister?
We don’t have to be in a brawl live in disunity, we simply have to be intolerant, insensitive and ignorant to how God wants us to live. Therefore, let us heed God’s command in Romans 14:19 and pursue things which produces peace, pursue things that build up one another, pursue things that keep us from bawling and keep us away from the heartbreak of living in disunity.
