The Second Amendment to the United States Constitution protects the right to keep and bear arms. It’s one sentence text says, “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” The amendment guarantees Americans complete access to nearly any gun on the market with little regard to the mental health of the gun owner.
“Thou shalt not kill” is the sixth commandment of the Lord. So, does the Second Amendment which allows the ownership of assault weapons and high-capacity magazines violates the sixth commandment because it enables people to kill?
Many faith and political leaders often cite the sixth commandment for their support of abortion restrictions. However, these same faith and political leaders cling to the supremacy of the second amendment as justification for no restrictions on gun ownership.
If abortion kills so, do guns. Hence as Christians, we must ask ourselves which is more important the second amendment or the sixth commandment? That is the question that should govern our decisions as Christians about guns in America.
