Matthew 27:15-23 describes a lively crowd in Jerusalem. Thousands gathering for the annual Passover ritual when the Roman governor in this case Pilate would free any prisoner the crowd wanted.
The prisoner picking was between two men ironically both named Jesus, Jesus Barabbas or Jesus Christ. The was not an easy situation for Pilate for his wife had told him to “Have nothing to do with that innocent man, Jesus Christ. But there he was dealing with Jesus Christ, calling out to crowd “Whom do you want me to release for you?”
Greatly influenced by the chief priests and the elders the crowd picked Barabbas. A shaken Pilate said again “Which of the two do you want me to release for you?” And again, they said, “Barabbas.” Then Pilate asked what should I do with Jesus who is called the Messiah. The crowd said, “Let him be crucified!” Taken aback Pilate asked, “Why, what evil has he done?” But the crowd shouted all the more, “Let him be crucified!” The picking had been done.
Which Jesus to pick happens in our lives and like Pilate we cannot avoid dealing with Jesus. Like Pilate we can let others try to choose our Jesus, however the real picking is always in our hands. So, as we start this Holy Week the question is which Jesus will you pick?
