On this Mother’s Day we recognize, celebrate, and see mothers.

We see the care in a mother’s smile, we see the specialness of a mother’s touch, and we see the wonderful ways of a mother’s love.  These things and more we see on greeting cards, television shows and in church services honoring mothers.

Yes, this time of year we see mother.  However, there is another mother that goes unseen that is the mother who is a victim of intimate partner violence.

A United Nation’s report revealed worldwide, nearly 1 in 3, or 30%, of women have been subjected to physical and/or sexual violence by an intimate partner or non-partner sexual violence or both.

Hagar is an Egyptian slave belonging to Abram’s wife, Sarai.   God makes a covenant with Abram that he will be the father of many nations.  However, Abram and Sarai are getter old, and they have no children.

Sarai gives Hagar to Abram with the intent to help God with the covenant.  However, when Hagar becomes pregnant Sarai is enraged.  At her hands Hagar is treated so badly that despite the pregnancy she runs away.

God sends an angel to reassure Hagar with a prophecy about her unborn son.  Elated Hagar praise God saying, “you are the one who sees me.”

On this Mother’s day as we continue to see and thank God for the goodness of mothers.  Let us also pray to the Lord for protection of mothers for all the things we do not see.

For we do not see Mothers experiencing homeliness, we do not see mothers who are sexed trafficked, we do not see mothers experiencing intimate partner or non-partner sexual violence.

On this mother’s day we pray for God’s vision so that we can see these women as the Lord saw Hagar.   And through your vision let us see ways in to help these mothers as God helped Hagar.

For God sees all mothers.
