Mother’s Day is perhaps one of the most emotional days of the year. For many the emotion is happy as Mom is treated to gifts both great and small. For others the emotion is sadness as mothers who have died are mourned, mothers who wanted to be mothers feel regret for the child that died, or the chance to conceive that was never within reach and mothers who gave birth but could not be a mother to their children are thought about by both mother and child with various emotions.
Regardless of the emotions, the role of a mother or mother figure is like that of a shepherd. Jesus in John 10 tells the traits of a good shepherd. The good shepherd like a good mother will lay down her life for her sheep. The good shepherd like a good mother knows their sheep and their sheep knows her. And the good shepherd like a good mother is willing to bring in and reach out to sheep that do not belong to her fold. For it is through her love that her sheep are placed in a position to thrive.
So, on this emotional day, let us rejoice for the Lord is our good shepherd.
