How good and pleasant it is when people dwell in unity! Is the message of Psalm 133. However, in a world of division, disagreements and disadvantage how can we have unity and peace with all this tension?
In 1965 at the height of Civil Rights Movement, Dr. King said, "True peace is not merely the absence of tension; it is the presence of justice."
Often, we are mistake unity and peace for tranquility the calm, serene, and worry-free state that we fool ourselves in thinking we can obtain on earth.
Instead, God desires that our unity and peace is rooted in something Dr. King and others called the Beloved Community. The Beloved Community is where not only people’s physical needs are met, but the tension that arises from our differences is met with a tolerant understanding of acceptance.
In the Beloved Community unity and peace is not easy, it is a daily tense struggle. In Romans Paul is writing to a diversified church comprised of Jews, Genitals, and polytheists. He recognizes the tensions by celebrating the differences saying that God has given us many gifts that when used in unity can only honor the Lord.
So, let us embrace unity, enjoy peace, and celebrate diversity in God’s Beloved Community.
