In Chapter 5 the prophet Amos calls for the people of the house of Israel to hear a lamentation, a funeral song announcing the death of the nation.
Israel has died because of the injustices committed by the wealthy and powerful members of the community who take advantage of the poor and the needy.
Israel has died because of the worship practices of the people. Who without enthusiasm or energy conduct solemn assemblies with gain and brunt offerings.
Israel has died because of decadence, corruption, and disobedience sins that will kill us all.
In this song of death Amos sings exhortations of life. Assuring the faithful and the sinners of the coming of the Lord proclaiming that justice will roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.
Rev. Dr. James Cone the founder of black liberation theology and an ordained minister in the African Methodist Episcopal Church wrote “Whatever God does must be just because he is justice”
The use of water as a metaphor for justice is God’s powerful symbol because of the role water plays in our lives.
Water is everywhere, 60% of our bodies are made from water, 71% of the earth is covered by water. We use water to produce energy, to cook our food, and to provide fun and leisure.
A new lamentation is being heard; this funeral song is announcing the death of planet Earth.
A death cause by the environmental injustices we have committed against God’s creation.
