The book of Joshua tells the story of the Israelites who, under God’s divine disruptions and Joshua’s guidance finally cross the Jordan River. Taking control of the land of Canaan.

Let’s be clear the land is God’s gift, promised to the ancestors in the stories of Genesis, and secured by conquest under God’s military leadership.

In generations to come, God’s gift Israel’s possession of its land would be endangered by outside attack or foreign domination.  Regardless of who may occupy the land because of Israel’s blunders,  Canaan, remains God’s gift to His chosen people.

But the people have little regard for the God who had given them the gift of the land and more importantly the gift of prosperity and of life.   For God brought them out of the land of Egypt out of the house of bondage only to be disobeyed and replaced idol Gods.

On God’s orders Joshua gathered the tribes of Israel.  He reminded them of all the things the Lord had done for them.  The battles God won for them, the crops God provided, and the richness of the land that God had given them.

Joshua then put the burden of faith squarely on the Israelites saying if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, the idols that you must provide gifts to or the God who have constantly given gifts to you.  Joshua closed saying as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”

In this season of gifts, where we are presented with so many gifts to choose from the question is which gift will we choose?  Let’s be certain we chose the gift of the Lord. The only gift worthy of receiving.
