We had taken several trips with our children, but then we added a new element when we adopted a dog since we could no longer tell our kids we could not have a dog because our landlord would not allow it but once we bought our own house we could not use that excuse anymore. 

This trip gave us a new perspective on traveling with both a dog and kids. Here are some tips that we took away from this drive. 

1.  If renting a car, it is better to pay a little more for a bigger vehicle than not having enough room. 
2. No matter how many stops you plan on your road trip it is not enough. Your dog and your kids will always need more stops than they would at home. 
3. Don't make your days too long. I try to avoid driving I am not familiar with in the dark which is easier said than done when things don't go the way you plan or those extra stops get you. 
4. When renting a car think about the customer care you will receive if something goes wrong. You want a company that will take care of you no matter where you are. Therefore stick with the major rental car companies if you are traveling long distances. 
5. When you have a pet be sure to call ahead to the motel/hotel and find out about their pet policy and if you have reserved a pet-friendly room. Otherwise, you might get to the hotel and find out they will not let you stay there or at least your animal. 
6. On the last day of the trip, do not plan a lot of stops as the kids will start getting antsy about getting home.
