Description

Here are our tips for riding a train such as one of Amtraks.

-On short-distance trains, there is coach and business class.
-On long-distance trains, there are coach and sleeping cars.
-There are two types of Amtrak long-distance trains on the east coast there is single-level Viewliner cars and on the west coast, there are Bi-Level Superliner cars.
-Sleeping car rooms include the roomettes, bedroom, and handicap rooms plus on the Superliner cars you have Family Bedrooms.
-If you are going to book a sleeping car room be sure to book early, very early, possibly even a year in advance.
-Don't have close connections when you are riding long-distance trains as trains can run late.
-Bring your own snacks even if you are in a sleeping car.
-If you are in a sleeping car bring duct tape.
-If you are riding in a coach bring a pillow and blanket and if in a sleeping car you may want to bring in your own pillow.
-Coach passengers are currently not allowed to use the dining car, you are limited to the cafe car.
-Business class on the short-distance trains is not glamorous like on an airplane but can be quieter than in a regular coach.
-Bring cash for tips.
-There will be a conductor and assistant conductor on all trains. On long-distance trains, you will also have car attendants, dining car attendants, and cafe car attendants.
-On long-distance trains where the train needs to be serviced or the conductor/assistant conductor the train will have a break that can be anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour, the employees will tell you how long but don't go far.
-Enjoy the scenery.
-Bring games for the kids as there will be no cell phone or internet coverage on much of the trip so have kids download movies or offline games.
-Use headphones.
