For those not familiar with the different types of airlines it can be confusing what is the best type of airline to fly and what is the difference between them. After all, there are legacy carriers, LCC carriers, ULCC carriers, hybrid carriers, and other types of carriers.
Legacy carriers are basically the airlines that are supposed to be offering a premium service or have been around for decades. Today we are down to three major legacy carriers in the US and they are United Airlines, Delta, and American; in Canada, you have Air Canada and in Europe, you have a host of carriers including British Airways, KLM, and Air France, and Lufthansa. However, if you are flying coach there is not a whole difference between these carriers and the other carriers.
Then there is the Low Coast Carriers or LCC. In the United States, you have Southwest, and Jet Blue is sometimes called an LCC but really is a hybrid. In Canada, you have West Jet and in Europe you have Easyjet. The LCC carriers only have one class of service (which is why Jet Blue with its Mint Class on transcontinental and European flights isn't a true LCC.
Finally, you have the Ulta Low Coast Carriers which in the US are Allegiant, Spirt, and Frontier, in Canada you have Swoop and Flair with more coming on line, and in Europe, you have Wizz Air and the most infamous ULCC's Ryanair. These are the airlines that will nickel and dime you for everything but with the Legacy carriers doing the same thing in some cases is there really a difference. Also in the United States, you have some new entrants in Avelo and Breeze Airways which are supposed to be a cut above the other ULCCs.
