Believing that business has a role to play for the betterment of society, Torin went into management consulting to learn how things run. However, he soon found out that ultimately, the problem in the workplace is often interpersonal. While many businesses did well at optimizing processes and technology, they remain relatively unsophisticated in the area of people optimization (e.g. neuroscience and psychology).
Back when leaders were just project managers, holding people to standards and deadlines, this might have been acceptable. Nowadays, this simple scope of activities would be completely unacceptable if someone wanted to call themselves a "leader". Regardless of the size and how your company operates -- whether it is a startup, remote, or big business, people need and will continue to need to feel psychologically and emotionally safe. It's probably something that large companies could and should learn from the small ones. Since human beings are wired with the ability to be personally connected with only a limited number of people, large companies should invest more in activities that make people know each other on a more personal level. This is especially important during the pandemic when we have seen unprecedented levels of depression, anxiety, and stress rise all over the world.
It's of utmost importance for leaders nowadays to recognize that to be a leader one has to make sure that the people in the company have a deep emotional and intellectual connection and psychological safety. Often that requires vulnerability, humility, authenticity, inclusion, and openness from leaders. When leaders can make teams feel psychologically safe, it inspires the courage to take the emotional and intellectual risks necessary for elite levels of team performance.
