During my last deployment, journaling served as my mental and emotional outlet. It was a great reminder of how important and valuable the simple act of  writing down my thoughts is.

Journaling can be tied yoga philosophy by the fourth niyama, Svadhyaya or self-study. Writing down our thoughts and emotions does a few things for us.

1. It forces us to put the jumbled mess in our head into a linear fashion, a sentence.
2. Once we write everything down, we can look at our thoughts from a different perspective.  Which typically allows to dissect our thoughts, and question them (self-study)
3. It allows us to get everything out of our head and onto a piece of paper, and that gives us some much needed space.

Additionally, journaling grants us the power of reflection. The greatest quarterbacks in the NFL spend hours watching themselves play to help them see their areas of improvement. We should do the same! Watch your own tape by writing about your day, what you did well or what could have gone better and track your progress.
I feel journaling is a great and easy entry to improve our mental health. I hope you enjoy this episode of The Ordinary Yogi Podcast and share with someone you think would benefit from this.
