At first look, it may seem that the spirit of the yogi and the spirit of the warrior are at odds. Aren't their actions and values inherently in contradiction? In yoga we value the principle of non-violence. This may all be well-and-good, but the modern yoga that many of us know and practice today has its roots in Indian wresting and calisthenic training. These physical and mental practices were implemented to strengthen and ready combatants for martial duty.
My guest this week is Sheila Schmid. She hasĀ been working with first responders the last several years both police and fire. In this episode we talk about her uphill battle of getting yoga teachings into the police force, how she became a yogi-gun owner and how yoga can benefit our first responders both mentally and tactically.
