Why Yoga? So that we may bring down stress, find peace, to meditate, to improve health, to energize, to heal, to actualise one’s potential, to get enlightened. One can easily find more reasons for “why yoga”. Mention of Yoga can be found in the earliest text known to mankind; the Rig Veda. Yet, the oral tradition that goes further back in time says that Yoga emerged from Tantra, before the Veda. Emerging research says the Vedic times were far more ancient than the five thousand BCE that is claimed at the moment. So at once it is contemporary and the most ancient. This astounding longevity and relevance can only be attributed to one thing, that it satisfies the most core need of mankind to be happy.
Why Art and Science? Science because the process is question, experience, prove and validate and only then conclude. It’s because of this approach that Yoga is in a constant state of reinvention, finding solutions to our problems of living and because it’s meant to be a way of life, you don’t experiment and a lab, but in life. Why art? Yoga is about giving expression to one self, about acquiring the skill of living, and evolving one’s own lifestyle that has in it grace, beauty and harmony. And among sciences, Yoga can be said to be the science of the present and the future, the science of consciousness. Yoga science is unique in that here the experimenter, subject and the knower are all all the same entity - you. Among the arts, Yoga can be said to be the mother of all arts, as it is the art by which you the aspiring yogi are the art material, the artist and the art piece. Only, be it science or art, the only qualification you need to aspire for Yoga to fill your life is neither aptitude nor age, not any extraordinary behavioral, cognitive, emotional or physical qualities, nor a particular sense of morality or belief. All you need is a desire to be happy, and an intent to consciously approach it.
In this blog, we explore the Path of Yoga, where the milestones are to be experienced internally rather than ‘out there’.
EPISODE 1
Yoga is about the ultimate subject. You. It’s therefore difficult to discuss a subject like physiology or physics. When you are the subject, it’s best to be inspired to get an understanding. In Episode 1, we have some poetry and a story which together set the stage for the expiration to come.
