In this episode, we turned a video interview idea into a podcast. We take a deep dive into how Jen became who she is today. We start at the very beginning of her journey in the industry over 23 years ago. Then we dive into a set of questions that she doesn't know is coming.
For our staff and everyone who's only known Jen for the last couple of years...enjoy.
Here's what it looks like:
- Jen quits UNH business school, enrolls in hair school, then tells her parents.
- How she chose her first salon.
- Educating for John Dellaria Salons onboarding with Framesi.
- Working with the best stylists at Dellaria.
- Finding a mentor.
- Breaking the rules and creating her own haircuts.
- Moving on to the next salon, without burning bridges or talking sh!t. (salon 2)
- Joining the Joico education team and training with Tabitha Coffey.
- Problems.
- Moving on to the next salon with an openly insane owner. (salon 3)
- Joining the Bumble and bumble education team.
- More problems, including a 20-page non-compete.
- Getting sued, lawyers, court, psychopaths, and a judge.
- Renting a chair. (salon 4)
- Problems in paradise. God shows up.
- Finding salon 5 while leaving salon 4 while still dealing with salon 3 and she pulls it off.
- Renting and doing all the things, means educating gets put on the back burner.
- Problems with more Looney Tunes owners.
- Finding salon 6 within 10 minutes and taking clients that same day.
- Salon 6 decides to move, so Jen takes over the lease with a partner.
- Salon 6 becomes The ECO Salon (salon 7), which is gutted and built out in 10 days.
- Todd joins ECO and then immediately quits because of toxic employees, math not making sense, and on and on.
- Partner problems cause Jen to quit her own business.
- Temporarily joining salon 8 which happens to be in the SAME building as ECO.
- Overwhelming amounts of stress.
You're not alone. Serious note, if you need help, reach out to us or find someone to talk to.
In the second half of the episode Jen answers these questions and touches on these topics:
- What aspect of owning a business do you leastenjoy?
- Talk to me about a struggle that you faced before opening Hello.
- What is something you wish you could snap your fingers and instantly improve?
- What is your greatest weakness?
- Tell me about a past decision that turned out to be a mistake.
- How difficult is it to separate the emotion when making a business decision?
- What is your least favorite part of the industry as a whole?
- What mistake do you see new stylists and barbers making who are coming out of school?
