It has been 13 years since the birth of Ishmael. During this time, Abram has not heard from God. It is during these 13 years of silence that God is preparing Abram to become a great man of faith. May we all be encouraged by those silent seasons.
As God comes to Abram, he changes Abram's name to Abraham and Saria's name to Sarah. God reveals to Abraham greater details concerning His promise to him. Here God specifically tells Abraham that Sarah is the one from whom the child of promise will come. The promise God gives to Abraham is beyond all human possibility, but with God all things are possible.
We are also introduced to circumcision as a sign of this incredible covenant. God gives Abraham clear instructions concerning circumcision. To perform this act of circumcision in adult males is very difficult, yet Abraham's response is immediate obedience. Obedience is everything in the life of a believer.
