Do you ever wonder why stressful situations deplete you of energy? Or why do you tend to be forgetful about things when under stress? Well this episode will dive into all things about the brain and how our brain uses our bodies energy.

In this episode I share some interesting research I found about how our brain consumes energy and how it’s used (please see links below for where information was found). I explore just a few things we go through that might cause our brain to consume much more energy.

So what causes our brain to use additional energy? Well, here are several examples:

  1. When you are struggling with an emotional situation.
  2. When you ponder (worry) problems vs. solve the problem. This is wasted energy.
  3. Have to make difficult decisions
  4. Dealing with friend or family drama
  5. When you have to perform or be “on”.
  6. Starting or learning something new.
  7. Clutter, not having a clean environment
  8. Marital struggles
  9. Difficult career/business decisions
  10. Grief
  11. Finances/Taxes
  12. Being constantly hurried/rushed. Feeling the need to constantly be hustling.

I also discuss ways we can conserve brain energy by doing some of the following:

  1. Stay off social media. Social media can consume a lot of mixed emotions and if you are not in a good place mentally, it can negatively drain your mental energy.
  2. Ask for grace from others during this season.
  3. Stay healthy. Get lots of sleep, eat right and exercise. Don’t let your emotions derail your physical health. You need that extra energy through healthy foods, sleep and exercise to deal with the extra mental drain of brain energy.
  4. Read a book- find a book that will speak to the season you are in and read.
  5. Automate the small stuff by creating some good habits. What can you make simpler to eliminate stress…for instance meal planning.
  6. Do what brings you joy and schedule it! Make the commitment to do it weekly and do not feel guilty for the time you need.
  7. Focus on what’s important and let the rest slide.
  8. Learn to say NO!
  9. Pray & spend more time with God.
  10. Get outside! Get some vitamin d. Did you know that vitamin D acts as a neurosteroid and plays important roles in the brain. Neurosteroids help you to respond to stress, anxiety, and depression.
  11. Communicate what you need with others and ask for help.
  12. Drop the guilt. Stop worrying about showing up for everyone else and show up for yourself.
