Kavita Goreeba, Midwife, talks to Doctor Jamie Shah, Neonatologist, about the value of vitamin K for newborn babies.

All babies are actually born with low levels of vitamin K, particularly because it does not cross the placenta well. Vitamin K is a group of vitamins that the body needs for blood clotting to help wounds or internal injuries heal.

Vitamin K is particularly important for newborns is because it helps prevent a bleeding disorder called haemorrhagic disease of the newborn.
