This short essay about two Dollys is part of my occasional series, Everyday Exuberance.
In this episode, I recall reading a first-person piece written by Dolly Parton for Allure magazine. In the article, Parton fondly remembered her friend and mentor, Chet Atkins, even though she did not take his advice many years ago at the start of her performing career. No matter, Parton is a great success doing things her way, and that's an excellent lesson in being true to oneself.
I also mention the important lessons I learned from another Dolly, my mom, who maintained her quirky sense of humor and kindness toward others no matter what life threw at her.
Great lessons indeed.
