The SuperTurbo is a mechanically driven turbocharger. It is capable of exchanging power to and from the engine crankshaft and, effectively is an on-demand boost device. The SuperTurbo gives an engine the exact amount of air it wants wherever and whenever it wants it. The different functions the SuperTurbo provides is found in superchargers, turbochargers and turbo-compounders. However, the SuperTurbo can provide the same functionality of these three devices in one package.

AVL has been a partner of Super Turbo assisting development in Diesel DVP and H2ICE simulation and testing.

 Diesel DVP

•  Created a durability test plan using the AVL Load Matrix™ test optimization process to tailor test cycles to achieve test severity inline with customer usage
• Developed test cycles to meet facility, engine and Superturbo capabilities and test cycle requirements
• Continue to monitor test progress, coordinate team reviews and monitor test results on a regular basis

 H2ICE Simulation and Testing 

• Conducted a comparison of Diesel and H2 operating conditions and analyzed impact on Diesel DVP.  This generated a list of priority actions for potential future analysis and testing
• Developing a H2 specific compressor design that SuperTurbo would own and be able to utilize on future customer products
• Conducted engine performance simulation to demonstrate potential for Superturbo to facilitate Diesel-like transient response and achieve NOx reduction towards EURO VI.
