There must be someone who loves blackberry cobbler more than I do, but I haven’t met them yet. As a young boy, I was a blackberry picking machine. Back then, like most of my friends, I lived on my bicycle, so I would “ride and seek” for great places to pick berries. Trust me, the hot Alabama sun, scratches from the sticker bushes and the occasional snake couldn’t deter me from my purpose of bringing home berries, so mom could make a delicious cobbler. Although the snakes did improve my prayer life and my high jump!

I recall one day when my dad told me a missionary friend from South America was going to be spending the night with us. I always enjoyed the visiting missionaries and hearing their stories of adventures in the jungles. This visit coincided with blackberry picking time, and mom asked me to pick some fresh berries, so she could make a dessert for our guest.

Later that evening, as the missionary finished his meal, Mom brought out the warm, juicy blackberry cobbler. When our guest took a bite, something happened inside of me. When I saw his delight, I was no longer in a big hurry to start eating my dessert. As he complimented Mom, I felt the joy of service.

Sometimes we go to church to enjoy our spiritual cobbler. Most of us look for a church with great music and great preaching. We all enjoy being fed spiritually. Yet the reality of being a Christian is so much more. Once we have tasted of His goodness, we should be compelled to share it; worshipping God by serving others. That’s a sweet recipe for joy!
