“Hey, Dad! Hey, Dad! I want to tell you thumpin.” is what I heard from a three or four year old boy who was holding tightly to his father’s hand as they were exiting a restaurant. The way he pronounced the word “something” calling it “thumpin” was so cute, but his excitement and desire to talk to his father was the absolute best! Again he exclaimed, “Hey, Dad! Hey, Dad! I want to tell you thumpin. That was really good!” His dad smiled down at him. Then, barely taking a breath, the small boy said, “Hey, Dad! Hey, Dad! I want to tell you thumpin. That was fun!” The dad looked down again with a huge smile.
As they walked across the parking lot, I could still hear him say, “Hey, Dad! Hey, Dad! I want to tell you thumpin…” With a huge smile on my face, I walked into the restaurant. As I waited on my food, I reflected on the exuberance and gratitude from that child and the obvious happiness written on the father’s face. I dearly love these moments of joy that God displays through his children every day; moments that not only bring a smile, but a tender reminder of the power of thankfulness.
We can all easily make a long list of the things we are thankful for, but as important as it is to have a thankful heart, we should also verbalize it. Expressing gratitude is so simple, yet one of the most powerful gifts we can give each other. Let's make it more than a priority, let's make it a habit. And always remember to put a smile on your Heavenly Father’s face…“Hey, Dad! Hey, Dad! I want to tell you thumpin.”
