This week The Nature of Nantucket sits down with the historian, linguist and author Dr. Frances Karttunen. Dr. Karttunen is arguably Nantucket’s premier historian. She has written over 11 books specifically on Nantucket’s fascinating people, places and issues over time. She has also researched and published widely on the languages of Finland and Mesoamerica. In this episode Dr. Karttunen shares some of her early memories of Nantucket, stories of the remarkable women who helped shape her career in linguistics, and her thoughts on the impact of the Maria Mitchell Association.
