You're listening to Bardtenders!
In this episode of The Mixing Glass, Clint Spotleson joins the Bardtenders to talk about his career in the hospitality industry, the evolution of the Phoenix, Arizona cocktail scene, his time spent at Herbs & Rye in Las Vegas, and the history of Sagamore Rye whiskey!
------------
Clint Spotleson grew up in Phoenix, AZ and has spent 20+ years in the bar industry, helping build the Phoenix cocktail scene. Early in his career, Clint got involved with Camp Runamok, where he built a love for whiskey, which eventually led to an opportunity to work with WhistlePig Rye in 2016.
Clint left Whistlepig in 2017 for a five-year stint in Vegas at Herbs & Rye, before returning home to Phoenix in late 2021. After some time with Kimpton Hotels, Clint made the decision to officially make the move out from behind the bar, where he ultimately landed his dream role as the Global Advocacy & Engagement Manager with Sagamore Rye.
Sagamore Rye has been around since 2013, where they initially bought their rye from MGP while starting up. In 2017 they opened our distillery in Baltimore, Maryland and have been producing our own rye ever since. We use a double mashbill recipe, a 95/5 (rye/ malted barley) high rye and a 52/43/5 (rye/ corn/ malted barley) low rye to create a rye that lines up with what you found historically in Maryland. We work hand in hand with local farmers to be a 100% Grain-to-Glass Maryland Rye Whiskey.
