Jesus saw them following and asked, “What do you want?” They said, “Rabbi” (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?” 39 “Come,” he replied, “and you will see.” John 1:38-39
The world in John the Baptist's day was in tremendous confusion. In John 1, John had been preaching for over a year. His ministry had thrown the Palestinian world into convulsions. Large multitudes, according to the Gospels, had come to hear him and be baptized. Matthew says that even Herod sought him and almost believed.
Just six weeks earlier John had been visited by Jesus. The prophet had first refused to baptize him but then deferred to Jesus' request. As he baptized Jesus, he saw the Holy Spirit come upon our Lord and heard God's words, "This is my Son, whom I love" (Matthew 3:17). So John's world was really whirling! It had only taken forty days to get the whirlpool going. The Lord had been in the wilderness. John had been ministering. John 1:19
