In one of Charles Spurgeon's sermons on Matthew 26, He focused on verse 67 "Then they spat in His face." He writes, "the priests, scribes, elders and their servitors did this shameful deed after they had heard our Lord say, "Hereafter shall you see the Son of Man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of Heaven." It was in contempt of this claim, in derision of this honor which He foretold for Himself that, "then they spat in His face," as if they could bear it no longer, that He, who stood to be judged of them, should claim to be their Judge — that He whom they had brought at dead of night from the Garden of Gethsemane as their captive, should talk of coming in the clouds of Heaven — "Then they spat in His face." It is truly and awful event. Even after all the miracles and healings Jesus had done, in the temple and throughout the region, they still couldn't bring themselves to think that this humble man could be their Massiah!
However, before I condemn them, I must ask myself, how am I so different? Jesus endured all of the shame and pain for me and yet, I often forget it and willfully sin. How is my intentional sin of swearing, anger, lying, or... any different from that of the Pharisees? It isn't and yet, Jesus still provides me with His grace and loves me! So join me in reading Matthew 26:31-75 and be encouraged!
