In Proverbs 25, we continue to get applicable instructions that stand the test of time. Here we find sayings of Solomon that were compiled by King Hezekiah. Below are a few that struck me today:
Like clouds and wind without rain is one who boasts of gifts never given. Proverbs 25:14
When I was a little kid, I was raising money for my local swim team via a swim-a-thon. One man at my dad's work promised to pay $1/lap thinking I'd only be able to complete a few. He was very loud and made sure everyone knew about his pledge. When I had completed all 200, he didn't pay. He didn't even give a single dollar! He was definitely a rain cloud that didn't fulfill its promise and it sucked! I can relate to this verse.
If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat; if he is thirsty, give him water to drink.
In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head, and the LORD will reward you. Proverbs 25:21-22
Unfortunately, for most of my life, I've focused on the second part of these verses. My motive at times when I've been kind to enemies has been the burning coals. I need to focus on the being kind and not the coals.
Like a muddied spring or a polluted well are the righteous who give way to the wicked. Proverbs 25:26
How do we destroy something good? Have the righteous do nothing. Am I doing enough to stand up for the good or am I allowing the beautiful, refreshing spring that is the USA be polluted? When some are saying good is evil and evil is good, am I doing enough to fight against it? I wonder how Solomon would evaluate our actions.
