Proverbs 29 has many ancient truths that stand the test of time. However, a few struck me as important to me and one, was especially impactful.
Do you see someone who speaks in haste? There is more hope for a fool than for them. Proverbs 29:20
On a personal level, this is one of my flaws. I tend to respond quickly, especially if I'm irritated or mad. My prayer today is, "Lord, please help me to slow down and apply your wisdom and understanding before I open my mouth to respond."
Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the LORD is kept safe. Proverbs 29:25
Spurgeon focuses on "the fear of man" being when a person is afraid of the consequences of bad behavior, ie jail or other punishment. This proverb struck me more as man's own internal fear. Are we operating out of fear? I know when I do that, I make bad decisions and impact myself and others poorly. Instead, we need to trust in God and we'll make better choices and live a more fulfilled life.
The righteous detest the dishonest; the wicked detest the upright Proverbs 29:27
Am I on the right side? The people I support or don't support, are they righteous or am I supporting them despite their behaviors because it's better for me. This proverb makes me check myself.
