Proverbs 30 records the sayings of Agur. Who was Agur? Not much is known. Proverbs 30 is the only known reference to him. What many have said is that he was an oracle and very old. In addition, in this discussion, he's speaking to much younger students. With that said, I admit his sayings are interesting and humble.

The following verses touched me:
I have not learned wisdom, nor have I attained to the knowledge of the Holy One. Proverbs 30:3
What is his name, and what is the name of his son? Surely you know! Proverbs 30:4

He begins in a self-deprecating manner stating he knows nothing and needs his student, Ithiel, to provide the name of God.
Every word of God is flawless; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him. Proverbs 30:5
We all, especially me, need a safe refuge and I'm so grateful it's God's word!
Keep falsehood and lies far from me; give me neither poverty nor riches,
but give me only my daily bread.  Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you
and say, ‘Who is the LORD?’  Or I may become poor and steal, and so dishonor the name of my God. Proverbs 30:8-9

Often, I've had successes in my life and I took the credit. I believed the hype and hardened my heart to the reality that it was God's doing, not mine. At other times, I've been struggling and took a shortcut. It wasn't illegal, but it sure wasn't right either.

Join me in reading Proverbs 30 and be encouraged by the sayings of Agur!

When we finish Proverbs, we'll be moving to the Gospel of Luke.
