Local government is an area where there is a strong presence of women. Maybe this is because women often have a commitment, a need to help the community they live in.
And local government is very much about supporting where we live, our communities, the place where our children grow up. It’s likely a place where we have the strongest friendships and its very much about our lifestyle.
Gwen Voelpel is one such leader. She loves her work in local government. She loves it so much that she returned from a position in the corporate world because local government is where her heart is.
She even describes herself as a municipal junkie.
Gwen spent time developing leaders through facilitating leadership programs and coaching men and women.
Now the city of SeaTac in Washington State has a dedicated Deputy City Manager who just happens to be a woman and a wonderful leader.
