On this episode, I share some analogies and examples on how coaches can influence movement patterns in their practices.
When it comes to influencing movements of the human body, the coach has some influence on how the athlete can move or solve the problem before them
If given strict rules like “you foot Needs to be here” "Your arm needs to be here at this point in time", this gives the athlete rigid rules to go by and conscious thought in the midst of moving, which is not ideal or transferrable to competition.
A good analogy would be that of a cyclist on a very narrow pathway and with one small error they fall off into the ledge
On the other hand, if the coach allows an affordance of movement or guard rails with some wiggle room for exploration and error like a kid in a bike in a large pavement, this can help them explore and course correct themselves.
Drills or constraints are a lot like training wheels on the bike, if you always shave training wheels you are missing the point of their purpose.
Use them to help learn but if you still have them, you’re not allowing for freedom of movement
