Meet Brent and Larissa McCown
Tattoo Black’s studio in Tairua is like a time capsule. The walls are lined with art and crafts from many different cultures. There are dozens of awards for Tribal tattooing from 15 years spent working in Europe and over 35 tattoo conventions a year. Brent jokes that he made his mistakes on Europeans to perfect his art, before returning home pre-covid with his Dutch wife Larissa, also a talented tattoo artist.
Tattoos are always called “teachers”. They teach young boys how to be better men. In Polynesian culture, where the women are already strong, tattoos are for protection. Brent and Larissa help people know and understand their lives better through getting tattoed.
Brent and Larissa tattoo with machines, but their passion is in traditional instruments and understanding the meaning and cultural history of Tatau.
