Show 118 Levi Hawken (NZ Artist/Skateboarder/Nek Minnit)

Welcome to ALTBAYS Show (feat. Leo Magri)

Meet Levi Hawken

Levi Hawken is a professional skateboarder (for Sector 9) from Dunedin, New Zealand. Hawken appeared in a viral video showing a scooter, apparently destroyed outside a dairy. The "nek minnit" video spawned many parodies and has become a popular slang term among the people of Aotearoa.

Hawken began his artistic career painting graffiti in Auckland City during the mid-1990s.

Although much of his graffiti work is no longer visible, the influences in his more formal paintings remain. In the past eight years, his work has turned from the once public forum of the walls and spaces in our cities to a more private and formal review of his style.

The new works embody Levi's concerns with his artistic demons and an emotional backlash against issues encased within the graffiti movement. Conflicted with the nature of street art through the constant personal and public battle, seeing one's art removed, vandalized and challenged from within the graffiti community and the public as a whole, Levi has made the poignant decision to take back ownership of his works by composing them on canvas, away from the public domain.

ALTBAYS Show invites awesome people from Aotearoa, New Zealand, to have an honest, laid-back conversation. Our platform focuses on bringing communities together to grow and thrive.
