Kimura was born in Sao Paulo in 1973, the grandson of Japanese migrants who settled in Brazil before the II World War. Graduated in law in 1996, embarked on a solo trip for 15 months to USA and Europe just after graduation. Became a lawyer in 1999.

From 2001 to 2003 lived and studied Civil Law in Japan under a scholarship provided by the Japanese provincial government of Fukushima.

After Japan, he spent two years in law firms in Sao Paulo, when again he went overseas to begin his Masters of Law at the George Washington University in Washington DC for a year in 2005, returning to Brazil in 2006.

Until 2016, worked in law firms and large corporations like Gol Airlines, Claro Telecom, IBM and CBS.

Moved to Hamilton, New Zealand, in January 2017 to enrol in a PhD program at the University of Waikato, Faculty of Law. His research is about ascribing legal personality to artificially intelligent social robots. He hopes to finish his PhD by July 2023.

Aside from academia and work, he practices judo in a local club, where he is also a qualified coach and teaches children and youth.

Prior to Covid, Kimura joined some advocacy groups to fight for migrants’ rights, founded the Association for New Kiwis Aotearoa (ANKA) and marched in front of the Parliament to pressure the government to open their immigration process and make it more transparent and straight forward.
