Some will say that nothing is more rewarding than living by the sea catching waves. Pia Rogers is a top young athlete from Whangamata who won the premier women’s division at the 2023 New Zealand Surfing Championship held at Piha in Auckland. She could not think of a life away from the water and comes to the Altbays Show to tell us more about the path to being a professional NZ athlete, the support she gets from the surfing community and much more!

Meet Pia Rogers

Pia is a 16-year-old surfer from Whangamata, NZ. She has competitively surfed from around the age of 13, now competing in under-18 and open women's competitions around Aotearoa, New Zealand. Pia Rogers won the premier women's division at the 2023 New Zealand Surfing Championship held at Piha in Auckland.

Surfing is her passion; being in the beautiful ocean with friends and family is special for Pia. She appreciates being part of the surfing community that pushes and supports each other.

She learnt to surf at the age of 8 as her mother and father have both always surfed. 

For the last six years of living in Whangamata, she spent most of her time either surfing the Whangamata beach or bar with her two brothers.
