If you think you should go to a place to catch waves, nothing should stop you; it does not matter if it is a bomb dropping not too far from your hostel or dodgy immigration officers, there is always a way around it. Ross experienced different cultures, tasted different flavours and got bitten by many mosquitoes to get where he is now: even if he could, he would not change a thing.
