With just a month to go until the Henley Literary Festival, we catch up with Events and Programme Director Harriet Reed-Ryan. Reflecting on the experience of running the 2020 festival online due to the pandemic, she explains how some key successes are being carried over. For example, the schools programme will run online only, having seen audiences increase almost fivefold last year. The 2021 festival will offer a blend of in-person events, some with a live-streaming option, and online-only events. Ahead of the main festival running from 2 to 10 October, on each Monday in September there will be an online interview with an author located elsewhere in the world.Henley Literary Festival traditionally uses several venues around the town: this year the Town Hall, the River & Rowing Museum and Christ Church will be joined by a larger purpose-built marquee in the grounds of Phyllis Court.When asked which author bookings made her dance a jig, Harriet mentioned radio presenters and podcasters Fi Glover and Jane Garvey, who will be closing the festival, and other lockdown stars such as fitness guru Joe Wickes, draw-along artist Rob Biddulph, and kitchen disco pop icon Sophie Ellis-Bextor. She reckons the whole programme is the best ever offered in the festival's 15 year history: take a look and you're bound to agree.
