Here we go with RTA episode 33!

Meet Greg Westgate.  Greg grew up playing in the woods around his Michigan home, exploring, being in nature and working on a family farm. He decided at the young age of 13 that he was going to join the military, inspired by an uncle in the US Marine Corps.  The Corps wasn't his destiny, however, and he continued to run into mentors that guided him away from heavy op tempo and deployment branches based on his being married.  He landed in the US Air Force as a mental health counselor and medic - not the military career he dreamed of, and perhaps the exact one he needed and needed him.  He was active duty from 2008-2012. Greg struggled with a lack of purpose in the years following the military where he missed the structure and formality of it. He experienced many low points in the following years as he struggled to find purpose.

Greg began buying and renovating houses and then flipping them for a profit to make a living, while his wife worked as a nurse and Greg stayed home with their two kids (at the time).  He began learning how to build knives, and dove into the craft, reading all the books he could find on the subject and experimenting in his shop.  Greg describes finding the craft of making knives like drawing breath for the first time, and after years of honing his craft, he learned that he could make money selling knives.

Greg’s knives have reached the next level, as they have been featured on the “Gear Section” of NYTimes best selling author, Jack Carr’s, “Danger Close” podcast.  He’s been commissioned to build his knives for several high profile military clients and events that will be disclosed in the near future, and he’s busier than ever working in alignment with the talents he’s been blessed with, crafting custom knives at home with his family around him.  Check out his Instagram page @westofthe_gate to see pics of his knives and DM him for more info.

Tune in and hear how Greg navigated through the ups and downs to find his true calling!
